About Veer Savarkar –

He was born on 28 May 1883 in Bhagur village near Nashik in Maharashtra.

In the year 1899, at the age of just 16, Savarkar formed an organization called ‘Mitra Mela‘ whose main objective was to achieve complete political independence of India. Later the name of this organization was changed to “Abhinav Bharat”.

Savarkar left for London in 1906 and there he started the ‘Free India Society’.

He was arrested in March 1910 and was sentenced to Kala Pani twice. He was released in 1924.

In 1937, Savarkar was elected President of the Hindu Mahasabha in the Ahmedabad session. He strongly opposed the partition of India and Pakistan.

Highly influenced by the philosophy of Joseph Mazzini, Savarkar translated his autobiography into Marathi which was banned for forty years.

In the Andaman jail, due to lack of writing material, he wrote his poems on the walls of his cell. His collection of poems is rightly titled ‘Jungli Phool’ (Wild Flower).

Savarkar’s famous works ‘Hindutva’ and ‘Hindu-pad-padshahi’ were written in Ratnagiri jail under the pseudonym Maratha.

During 1907-1908, he wrote a book titled ‘First Indian War of Independence, 1857’ in London.

He died on 26 February 1966.

Recent In News– The Rajasthan Secondary Education Department has announced to celebrate Vir Savarkar Jayanti and abrogation of Article 370 in the ongoing academic year. 

Vir Savarkar Jayanti will be celebrated in schools on 28th May.

The abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir will be celebrated on 5th August as Swarna Mukut Mastak Diwas.
