Ramgarh Crater
The approximately 165 million year old Ramgarh Crater near Ramgarh village in Baran district has recently been declared the state’s first Geo Heritage Site in consultation with the Geological Survey of India.
The Ramgarh Crater is a 3.5 km diameter depth which is believed to have been formed by the collision of a meteorite.
The Ramgarh Crater area has been declared a protected reserve under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, to conserve and enhance the natural wealth located here.
The Pushkar Pond Complex, notified under the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, located inside the crater, further enhances the beauty and diversity of the area.
Here the historic Khajuraho style Bhanddevara temple built by the Chandela dynasty in the 10th century is an important place of faith and religious tourism for the common people. The state government has recently announced the development of Ramgarh Crater in the Budget 2024-25.
