Naming of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Central Government has named 21 islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.

It was announced on the occasion of Parakram Diwas, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Earlier, Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during his visit in 2018. With this Neil Dweep and Havelock Dweep were renamed as ‘Shaheed Dweep’ and ‘Swaraj Dweep’.

The 21 Param Vir Chakra winners named after these islands are – Major Somnath Sharma; Subedar and Honorary Captain (then Lance Naik) Karam Singh, MM; Second Lieutenant Ram Raghoba Rane; Naik Jadunath Singh; Company Havildar Major Piru Singh; Capt GS Salaria; Lieutenant Colonel (then Major) Dhan Singh Thapa; Subedar Joginder Singh; Major Shaitan Singh; CQMH. Abdul Hameed; Lt. Col. Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore; Lance Naik Albert Ekka; Major Hoshiyar Singh; Second Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal; Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon; Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran; Naib Subedar Bana Singh; Captain Vikram Batra; Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey; Subedar Major (then Rifleman) Sanjay Kumar; and Subedar Major Retd (Honorary Captain) Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav.

Company Havildar Major Piru Singh Shekhawat

Major Shaitan Singh

Piru Singh Shekhawat was born in Beri village of Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. He achieved martyrdom while showing his courage in the Indo-Pak war of 1947. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra in 1950.

INAN 374 Deep has been renamed as Piru Deep after Company Havildar Major Piru Singh.

Major Shaitan Singh was born in Banasar village of Jodhpur. He was martyred in the battle of Rezang La in the Indo-China war of 1962.

INAN 255 The island has been renamed as Shaitan Singh Dweep after Major Shaitan Singh. Param Vir Chakra was started on 26 January 1950. It is India’s highest gallantry military honour. The first Paramveer Chakra was given to Somnath Sharma. The first Paramveer Chakra of Rajasthan was given to Piru Singh Shekhawat.
